Address Delivered by General WM. B. Bate on Occasion of Dedicating the "Battle-Ground Academy," On the Field of Franklin.

Franklin, Tennessee, Saturday, October 5, 1889

William Bate's words serve as a reminder of that period in our history that bridges the Civil War to those of us living over a century and a half later.  The post-war era defined the collective memory of the war as much as the conflict itself.  We would all be better served to read what those who survived the war wrote and said and carefully evaluate what it all means today.  As William Faulkner wrote, "The past is never dead.  It's not even past."
