“Sheep in the Manger” by Annie Vick Carter McKinney Baltishwiler

This farm scene was painted in 1863 by Annie Carter as a gift for her youngest brother Francis Watkins Carter. The original oil on canvas piece in the only known surviving painting by Annie. The ninth of twelve children, Annie was born at the Carter Farm in Franklin, TN in 1838. She was widowed at the age of 18 and was living with her father in 1864. Annie survived the Battle of Franklin with her family and later married a Federal soldier. She had one surviving son and lived until 1901.
